PELETIER — Newcomer Anne Scott of Peletier beat out incumbent Stephanie Krzich of Cedar Point by a large margin with nearly 69% of the vote for the District 1 Board of Education seat during 2026 primary elections Tuesday.
The District 1 seat, which covers the western end of the county, was the only one of four school board seats up for grabs during the primary election because the other candidates are running unopposed.
Scott, a dental administrative assistant and substitute teacher, said Wednesday, “I am thrilled to be elected to represent District 1 on the Carteret County School Board and tremendously grateful for the love and support from our community. Since 2011 I have worked hard to collaborate with local businesses, non-profit groups and families to meet the classroom needs our teachers and administrators have expressed. As a school board member, I will continue to serve in this capacity alongside other board members to equitably distribute funding and resources across all schools in our county.”
Scott went on to say, “I will advocate for higher salaries for our teachers and bus drivers and hope to find creative ways to offer afterschool and summer programming to help all students be successful.”
Krzich, an accountant, has been serving on the school board for District 1 since October 2024 after she was appointed to fill the seat left vacant by Dana Mull, who had to resign to take care of a sick family member. As of the time of this posting, she could not be reached for comment. In her campaign statement, she had said she was running to keep a strong conservative voice on the board.
Other Board of Education seats that will be on the ballot during the November general elections include District 3, held by Clark Jenkins of Morehead City, who will be running unopposed and seeking his third term.
Newcomer Brooke Cash of Beaufort will be running unopposed for the District 5 seat. She will replace Brittany Wheatly, who opted to not seek reelection after serving two terms on the board.
Kathryn Smith Chadwick of Stacy will be running unopposed for the District 6 seat in the general elections. She will be seeking her third term on the board.
The Board of Education has seven members, who serve four-year staggered terms. Three other seats will be up for grabs in 2028.
As for the winner, Scott said in her campaign statement that she moved to Carteret County in 2009. She has served her community in multiple ways, including teaching Sunday School and being Chair of the Childcare Committee at Swansboro United Methodist Church. She is a member of the White Oak Elementary School PTO Board and Parent Advisory Council, she is involved with the athletics boosters and band boosters at Croatan High School.
She has served on multiple community outreach committees including the Cape Carteret Trail and Carteret Health Care Foundation. She has worked as a substitute teacher locally since 2016 while supporting her husband’s dental practice as an administrative assistant.
